What is the most embarrassing situation a "Shabbos Goy" could be called into solve?
Such is the premise of the aptly named - and incredibly hilarious - 7-minute short film "Shabbos Goy."
For those unaware, by traditional Jewish law, not only can a Jew not use electricity on Shabbat, but cannot ask a non-Jew to do it for him/her. A Shabbat-observant Jew cannot ask a non-observant Jew to do it either. The concept of the Shabbos Goy likely came into existence when Jews made it to colder European countries and needed someone to add fuel to the stove in winter on Shabbat. "Goy" is sometimes considered by some people to be a pejorative term but just means "nation" in Hebrew and refers to non-Jews in general.
As a tour guide of Israel who is Shabbat-observant but generally works with non-Shabbat observant clients, exactly what I can and can't do - and what people can and cannot do on my behalf - is something that often comes up on a trip to Israel.
There have been a number of quite famous "Shabbos Goys" in history including presidents, vice-presidents, Supreme Court justices and generals. There was even Elvis - who didn't identify as Jewish but was actually likely technically a Jew by Jewish law. I can just imagine one of these famous figures dealing with the situation as outlined in the movie below. To its credit, sex in the Orthodox world isn't the only stereotype it challenges in its 7 minutes of runtime.
