One of the most dramatic moments on possible tours of Israel, is when as a tour guide of Israel, I take people to the town of Sderot and we finally end the day by going up on a hill and looking out over Gaza. While much of the world's focus regarding Gaza has to do with Israel, people often sadly forget that Egypt also shares a border with Gaza (and occupied the enclave for 19 years without offering statehood or wanting the territory back during the peace agreement with Israel in 1979). To say that Egypt is not fond of Gaza, is to put it nicely. Hamas, which runs Gaza, is an offshoot of the Moslem Brotherhood, the extremist religious opposition group in Egypt which has continually used terrorism as a weapon and attempted assassinations on Egyptian heads of state. So it should come as no surprise that Egypt has no desire to see Hamas being able to have tunnels running in and out Gaza to and from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. So what have they done about it? The same thing as Israel but on a much bigger and harsher scale.
