The Fascinating Story of Israel's National Anthem and its Author

Naftali Herz Imber is well-known as the author of Israel's national anthem Hatikvah. Yet the text went through numerous versions and perhaps even more "foundation stories," which are gold mines for a tour guide of Israel. Still, in my eyes, there is one more warranted change. For 2000 years we only looked East if we were in the West. A Yemenite Jew faced North. An Iraqi Jew faced West. A Syrian Jew faced South. Perhaps it is time that this sacred text, which shows the biases of the writer/editor themselves, should state "artza" - to the land - as opposed to "mizrach" (East).
