Pride Alert: Israel Sets a New LGBT Record

Updated: Aug 21, 2020

While the famed Tel Aviv Pride Parade could not occur this year due to COVID-19, there is something else that the LGBT community in Israel can be proud of that did happen this month. June is Gay Pride Month so it is fitting that Israel just set a new personal record in regards to the LGBT community. In the new Knesset (parliament), Israel now has six openly gay MKs (members of Knesset). There are only 120 Knesset members, so that means that exactly 5% of the representatives are open members of the LGBT community. Considering that about 5% of any overall population is LGBT, this means that for the first time in Israel's history, the numbers of (open) representatives is commensurate with their numbers in the population.

As a tour guide of Israel, I am always happy to create personalized experiences for my clients. If you would like to do an LBGT tour of Tel Aviv (the gay capital of the Middle East) or have a meeting at Jerusalem's Open House, I am happy to include that in your itinerary.
