As a tour guide of Israel who runs a quite tasty Israel culinary tour, one of the themes I talk about is fusion. What happens when East meets West? Ashkenazi meets Sephardi meets Mizrachi meets Yemenite, etc. When Jews bring their various culinary traditions from 100 countries around the world together?
Over the last number of years the general answer to that has been, as Borat would say, "great success!" The ability to blend and mix and fuse these various cuisines together has created some of the world's top chefs.
And then there is this.
Yes, somebody decided to take the dill pickle, perhaps the symbol of the Ashkenazi Jewish immigration to the USA and combine it with none other than the number one food staple of the Middle East: hummus. That's right, Dill Pickle Hummus is now a thing. For anyone brave enough to try this abomination - and
who manages to escape a good stoning for heresy - please send us a video so that we know you are alive afterwards. If you are brave enough to make your own, check out the video below for a recipe (but really - no olive oil? - is that even allowed?).
As for me, well, I'll be quite content to combine the two by watching the new Seth Rogen movie "An American Pickle" which is coming out on August 6 (brand-new trailer below) while eating a nice bowl of hummus, (non-dill pickles on the side). https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/culture/yiddish-hipster-heaven-awaits-with-seth-rogens-an-american-pickle-634090
Of course, if somehow this experiment proves to be a success, if dill pickles somehow can mesh successfully with hummus, then there is no reason why all Jews should not be able to unite finally. That's right - this could be a sign that either the apocalypse - or the messiah - is upon us. Stay tuned and stay safe everyone.
