Bibi on TV: Our Prime Minister Gets/Makes His Own Drama
Updated: Jun 7
One of those questions I get all the time as a tour guide of Israel is just who exactly is Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu.
A) A great orator and passionate defender of Israel but often criticized for being more bark than bite?
B) The greatest political animal/manipulator Israel has ever seen, leading him to have served more years as Prime Minister than anyone else in Israel's history
C) A corrupt egomaniac who in recent years has shown himself to care much more about his own image, position and power than the country he leads?
D) A leader who is notably more caretaker than visionary, preferring to guard the status quo in both the foreign and domestic arenas despite several untenable situations?
E) A realist who puts Israel's survival above all else and refuses to take unnecessary risks?
F) A populist/opportunist who is willing to say/do whatever to stay in power?
G) A martyr of a left-wing plot to bring him down?
H) A security/economics expert who has kept Israel safe despite the upheaval around us and thriving economically (at least for some sectors of society) pre-corona?
I) A puppet controlled by his wife Sara who may actually be the most hated political figure in Israel's history (and that includes an Israeli-Arab Knesset member who was caught spying for Hizbullah and fled the country)?
J) A graduate of my high school in Philadelphia who can probably also recite the prologue to Canterbury Tales in Middle English (thanks Mrs. Bintner)?
K) All of the above? None of the above?
Well, we are about to find out.
HBO is creating a documentary on his life called Bibi which will be based on the bestselling biography “The Netanyahu Years” written by veteran Israeli journalist Ben Caspit. It will be produced by the
team behind the hit TV show Shtisel and written by the Emmy-award winning writer of the John Adams documentary. For more see the article here: https://www.timesofisrael.com/netanyahus-life-story-to-be-made-into-hbo-series-bibi/
Of course if you'd like some courtroom drama in real-time, feel free to follow along with our Trial of the Century, as for the first time in Israel's history, a sitting Prime Minister is going on trial. And if the opening moment [where he decried a left-wing conspiracy of the courts, the police, the media and state prosecutors] is anything to go by, we are going to be in for quite a show. [Note: we also recently had a left-wing PM prosecuted and put in jail, so I'm not sure that argument holds water.] For more on the various charges click here: https://www.timesofisrael.com/the-state-of-israel-v-benjamin-netanyahu-the-specifics-of-the-pms-indictment/
