Haifa Tower is Falling Down, Falling Down, Falling Down

Updated: Aug 21, 2020

Imagine if Big Ben, Golden Gate Bridge or the Eiffel Tower just decided one day that it was tired and felt like coming down. Well, that's what happened on Friday when the symbol of Haifa's skyline (I know it's not as impressive as the Bahai Gardens but it's easier to make out as it sits alone) disintegrated on Friday. One of the two cooling towers from the oil refinery, originally built by the British when they controlled the Middle East, came crashing down unexpectedly. Fortunately nobody was hurt in the incident. The British had built a pipeline to send oil from Iraq to Haifa where it was refined and then shipped by boat to Europe, but the cooling towers had not been in use since 2009. Of course Israel's Environment Minister used it as an opportunity for a photo op in the hopes it would be a symbol of blue and white going green. As a tour guide of Israel, I often include the site in my "I Spy" competitions with kids, youth groups and tech tours but I'm going to have to update my game now....
