One thing people always notice while touring Israel with me [an Israel tour guide] is that almost every residential building in Israel has solar panels on the rooftop. This is an Israeli invention which is connected to a water heater and it's how we heat the water in our homes. Even the Israeli parliament building, the Knesset, has solar panels on top. Well, now the plan is to try and rapidly expand upon that idea. Recently we have moved from coal-burning power plants to natural gas (due to the natural gas fields discovered in the Mediterranean) but that is not enough. We do have some major solar fields in the south including the giant solar tower at Ashalim. But now, apparently the government's goal is to up our renewable energy from the 17% mandated in the Paris accords (of our total energy output) to 30% by the end of the decade.
