2 New Documentaries on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are Now Out
Updated: May 31
I'm really excited to see the 2 new documentaries on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where most Christians are marking the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The first is about the Holy Fire Ceremony (see the photo), perhaps the most exciting moment in organized religion today, and reminiscent of the end of Yom Kippur in the days of the Temple.
The second is about the various denominations and sects and their battles for control and territory in the church itself. It is hard to imagine but priests have actually spilled each other's blood right in front of the tomb of Jesus - which I'm just going to throw out there is probably not what he wanted - as these different communities have literally fought each other for power at the site. It's a fascinating story to watch, at least until you can come with me on a tour of the church, which can focus on a spiritual journey, the art and architecture, the history and the fighting in the church, or how the entire structure and traditions were built to mirror the Jewish Temple (it is a fascinating site for Jews as well in that regards).
