The Greatest Rabbi/Ethicist of Our Times Has Passed Away

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, whom I consider to be the greatest rabbi, teacher, ethicist and philosopher of our generation, passed away on Shabbat. His deep knowledge of secular subjects, literature, history and philosophy from ancient to modern was unique among Jewish thinkers and as such, he was able to relate to a non-Jewish audience as well as a Jewish one. An ambassador for faith and morality, tolerance and repairing the world, his books have been and his videos have been viewed by millions across the globe. As a tour guide of Israel, I regularly incorporate some of his ideas into my guiding, notably the idea of the particular and the universal (as opposed to the particular vs. the universal). He was the closest thing I had to a rebbe and I personally feel privileged and grateful to have lived in a time when I could sit and learn at his feet, even if he was thousands of miles away.

Below are some of my favorite videos of his, though you can see all of them here: https://www.youtube.com/c/rabbisacks

While I was putting together this post, my friend Zev Stub also compiled a list which can be seen here: https://www.jpost.com/judaism/watch-the-best-of-rabbi-lord-jonathan-sacks-648522

You can also check out his amazing books at this link (see pictures below)...

A wonderful blog post about his thoughts on interfaith relations, diversity and cooperation can be found here:

And the obituary in the NY Times is incredibly well done: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/09/world/europe/jonathan-sacks-dead.html

In the meantime, please pray for the elevation of his soul.

His name was HaRav Ya'akov Tzvi ben David Arieh of blessed memory.

3 months ago I wrote about the passing of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, of blessed memory, who was likely the most accomplished Jewish scholar of the past 750 years or more. For more on that click here: https://www.tourguideofisrael.com/post/perhaps-the-greatest-jewish-scholar-in-1000-years-has-died

Here is a photo of Rabbis Sacks and Steinsaltz together. Hopefully they are sharing some laughs and Torah together up in heaven.
