Israel Archaeology Update: Dating Ruins by Poop & Much More

So many incredible archaeological discoveries were announced in the past month here in Israel. As a tour guide of Israel I cannot wait to see some of these in person - and for you to join me on this adventure!

A New Dating Process

A new way of dating - in addition to known ones like carbon-dating and using pottery and coins - has been developed by Israeli archaeologists. It might be yucky, but it gets the job done. Basically it uses human and animal waste found in mud-brick structures. For more check out...

The First Copper-Smelting Workshop?

"A new archaeological study shows that even some 6,500 years ago, Israel was already a start-up nation — complete with a metallurgy R&D hub in Beersheba. Salvage excavations in the Negev Desert capital in 2017 revealed 6,500-year-old copper smelting workshops using the earliest-known evidence of furnaces instead of small portable crucibles for metallurgy." This is certainly one of the first - if not the first - of its kind in the world.

An Ancient Shipwreck & Masthead

A 7th-8th c. CE shipwreck discovered just off the coast by Kibbutz Maagan Michael has yielded an incredibly rare find - a masthead. For more check out:

The Mysterious Hole in the Temple Mount

A hole mysteriously opened on the Temple Mount floor in the southwest corner of the compound. It was a chance to look around and see what was there but instead of the Israeli Antiquities Authorities being allowed to investigate, the Islamic Waqf filled it in, as G-d forbid anything Jewish be found there.

After Thousands of Years - a Uniform Length for a Hand-Breadth

The ancient unit of measurement known as a tefah - supposedly the width of an adult man's hand - "is attested to in the Hebrew Bible (see Numbers 25:25 and 37:12), as well as in ancient Assyrian and Egyptian sources. But the precise measurement of the biblical unit has remained a matter of longtime rabbinical debate." Well that debate might now be over:

Proof of Jewish Literacy in the Biblical Period

"Jews have always been known as the “People of the Book,” but how many people in the Kingdom of Judah could read and write?" A new study from Biblical Tel Arad suggests that literacy was widespread...

The Missing Assyrian Siege Ramp at Azekah

Israeli archaeologists may have found the Assyrian siege ramp from the Judean city of Azekah which their destruction of the city in 701BCE. This corresponds with Sennacherib's "Azekah Inscription" - The city of Azekah … located on a mountain ridge, like pointed iron daggers without number reaching high to heaven. [Its walls] were strong and rivaled the highest mountains… [by means of beaten (earth) ra]mps, battering rams … I captured, I carried off its spoil, I destroyed, I devastated." …”

And if you missed my recent posts on two special finds...

The Jurassic Park Palm Tree

A 2000-year old date palm tree finally became a father. That's right. After date pits found at the ancient desert fortress of Masada were brought to Kibbutz Ketura's Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, a modern miracle occurred. They grew a date palm out of that pit. And now - after a hot date - that ancient palm tree is now a father...

A Royal Structure Overlooking Jerusalem

By the Jerusalem overlook - far outside the walls of the Old City - a royal find dating back to the dynastic line of King David 2700-years ago was discovered. Three immaculately preserved column heads - often referred to Solomonic capitals - as well as number of other artifacts were found, including a toilet, which back then was a sign of wealth and status. What were they doing there? Did they have a royal overlook as well? For more click here...
